Edem Wosorno: The people of Sudan are facing a humanitarian crisis of tragic proportions after five months of brutal and merciless conflict

17Sep 2023(pen) "The people of Sudan are facing a humanitarian crisis of tragic proportions after five months of brutal and ruthless conflict that continues to intensify and expand," said UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Director of Operations Edem Woosorno.

Edem Woosorno said the needs were enormous and that some 24.7 million people, about half of the population, needed humanitarian assistance and protection, adding that there were currently more than 5 million displaced people inside and outside the country.

The director of operations at OCHA said cases of sexual violence had risen to painful levels. The health system has been devastated, disease has spread, and more than 6 million people are at risk of starvation.

"Unhindered and unfettered access, as well as increased funding and resources, are critical to responding quickly and at scale," she said.
