UNFPA: Women and children in Sudan face an increasing risk of famine

2 June 2024 (PEN) The humanitarian situation in Sudan is set to deteriorate significantly, putting pregnant women, mothers and children at risk of famine, the United Nations Population Fund said. To avoid worst-case scenarios, the Chairs of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee requested urgent action, including to protect civilians and facilitate unimpeded humanitarian access.

The Permanent Committee stressed the need to stop all acts of infringement or politicization of humanitarian work, in addition to simplifying administrative procedures for delivering aid.

It also called for an end to the escalation of the situation in El Fasher and the adoption of a nationwide ceasefire, in addition to stopping human rights violations and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes, including grave violations against children.
