Sudanese refugees face a severe humanitarian crisis as the influx into Chad increases

June 17, 2024 (PEN) UNHCR reported that since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan in April 2023, CNARR, UNHCR and IOM have been facing a massive influx of Sudanese refugees and Chadian migrants returning from Darfur, who have crossed Chad's eastern border. The Commission said that humanitarian projections indicate that an estimated 910,000 people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

UNHCR added that to ensure the protection of these people, it has launched a large-scale census operation along the border, allowing the collection of basic data on refugees in order to provide targeted assistance. At the same time, efforts have begun to move from host villages to forward sites to facilitate individual biometric registration of refugees when they settle in guard sites.
