The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan calls for urgent aid to Sudan

16 April 2024 (PEN) The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, has expressed concern about the situation in Sudan, where 17.7 million people - more than a third of the country’s population - face acute food insecurity (IPC3+). She added that the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS) network had warned of a possible famine, based on information from the Global Integrated Patent Classification Group (IPC Group). Among those affected, 4.9 million people are on the brink of famine.

Salami also pointed out the high rates of malnutrition in Sudan, where about 730,000 children suffer from severe acute malnutrition. She called for immediate action to be taken to help these children and provide support to Sudanese in need, stressing that "no child should go to sleep hungry." It urged the urgent provision of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the population affected by the crisis.
