UNICEF: 3.5 million Sudanese children face the risk of famine

July 1, 2024 (PEN) At a time when the humanitarian crisis in Sudan is dangerously escalating, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned of the risk of famine and catastrophic loss of life, citing an urgent need for US$240 million in funding. UNICEF explained that this funding is necessary to contribute to preventing famine and providing vital aid to more than 3.5 million children under the age of five in 93 local areas with weak infrastructure in Sudan.

For its part, UNICEF provided a look at its efforts over the past year, during which it was able to secure safe drinking water for 10.9 million children and their families, and provide basic health services to 9.2 million people. 7.3 million children were examined for malnutrition, treatment was provided to more than 400,000 children, in addition to supporting more than two million children with psychological and social counselling.
