Britain awards a medal to one of its citizens in recognition of his efforts to maintain the safety of its embassy employees in Khartoum

14 May 2024 (PEN) The UK has awarded the King's Medal for Bravery to Mr Elsdon Dew, in recognition of his courage and dedication while facing difficult conditions during fighting in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in April 2023. On his first mission abroad, he found himself facing heavy fighting between armed forces Sudanese and Rapid Support Forces.

The British Foreign Office stated that his leadership skills and willingness to sacrifice were demonstrated when he drove his car during the fighting to the embassy compound and residence to house the British Embassy employees and their families. While they were trapped in the compound, he provided support, guidance and assistance to the besieged group, including helping the husband of a diplomat having a panic attack.

She also added that Dio's courageous and professional behavior embodies his continued provision of assistance and support in difficult circumstances, defying personal danger and facing risks for the safety of others.
