The return of diplomatic relations between Khartoum and Tehran after an eight-year rupture

October 9, 2023 (pen) The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday the return of diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, following high-level contacts between the two countries that took place during the past months.

The ministry said in a statement today that the Sudanese and Iranian sides “agreed to take the necessary measures to open the two countries’ embassies soon and exchange official delegations to discuss ways to develop joint cooperation between the two countries.”

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation between them in all fields that would achieve the interests of the peoples of both countries and ensure the security and stability of the region.

Sudan severed its diplomatic relations with Iran in January 2016 after storming the Saudi embassy in Tehran in solidarity with Riyadh.
