12 September 2023 (UN) - The High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has concluded his visit to Chad over the weekend. During his visit, he called for more international support to help Chad deal with the increase in the number of refugees from Sudan.
According to the United Nations, more than 400,000 refugees, mostly women and children, have arrived in Chad's Ouadi, Sila and Wadi Fira provinces. Most of the refugees come from Darfur and arrive in desperate conditions, especially in the border town of Adré, which hosts more than 150,000 people in a informal settlement, and the United Nations said another 75,000 refugees have been relocated from Adrri to two newly built refugee settlements.United Nations reports.
"Despite significant efforts by humanitarian partners to ensure access to basic services such as health, water, sanitation and food, the continued influx of refugees is putting pressure on resources and communities already stretched, with current levels of funding insufficient to address the emergency and long-term development needs of refugees and host communities," the UN said.
The conflict since April 15 has displaced more than 5 million people, according to UN reports.
