Volker Peretz warns of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan

June 26, 2024 (PEN) In a television interview, Volker Peretz, professor of political science and former UN special envoy to Sudan, warned that the humanitarian situation in Sudan was escalating to record levels of crisis. Peretz stressed that “the current situation is the worst ever in the history of Sudan and in a number of other African countries.”

Peretz explained that the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has significantly worsened the humanitarian crisis, leading to a severe shortage of basic resources such as food, water and health care. He described the situation as “catastrophic,” with the situation exacerbated by ongoing displacement that is hampering efforts to deliver humanitarian aid.

Peretz stressed the need for urgent intervention from the international community to provide the necessary support and support humanitarian efforts in Sudan.
