OCHA: Sudan now has the largest number of internally displaced people in the world

14 September 2023 (Pen) – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that the number of people displaced inside and outside Sudan since mid-April now stands at 5.25 million. Sudan now has the highest number of internally displaced people in the world.

In its report released today, the Office said up to 15,500 people had been displaced following inter-communal fighting in West Darfur state.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said FAO needs US$123 million to reach 10.1 million people in 17 countries while supporting vital livelihoods.

The office said cases of acute malnutrition had increased by 300 per cent in Gezira State. Heavy rains and flooding have affected some 59,100 people in six districts across the country since July, he said.

The conflict in Sudan since April 15 between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has killed more than 5,000 people and displaced millions, according to United Nations reports.
