The outgoing Mauritanian president leads the preliminary results in the elections

June 30, 2024 (PEN) The outgoing Mauritanian president, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, topped the preliminary results of the presidential elections after 42% of the votes were counted, receiving 53% of the votes according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Candidate Biram Dah Abeid came second with 22%, followed by Hammadi Ould Sidi Mokhtar, head of the National Rally for Reform and Development party, with 13%, then lawyer Eid Ould Mohamed with 3%.

The committee reported that votes had been counted in 1,879 out of 4,503 polling stations, a rate of 42.51%. Preliminary results are expected to be announced later.

The elections, which took place on Saturday, witnessed the participation of seven candidates, and if no candidate obtains an absolute majority, a second round will be held on July 13.
