Broad Arab solidarity with Libya in confronting the effects of the floods

September 12, 2023 (Anatolia) 10 Arab countries announced on Monday their solidarity with Libya in the face of the recent floods, amid an Emirati and Qatari directive to send urgent aid, as this came in official Arab statements, issued by the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia and Algeria, with the continued severe damage to lives and property as a result of the floods that faced eastern Libya.
Official data issued by the Libyan Government of National Unity (in Tripoli) speak of the registration of 47 dead and more than 18 missing, in a number of affected cities in the east of the country, except for Derna.
However, Osama Hammad, head of the Libyan government in charge of the parliament (east of the country), said in press statements that the number of victims in the city of Derna alone "exceeds two thousand dead," according to the Libyan News Agency.
For his part, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan decided on Monday to send rescue teams and urgent relief aid to Libya to cope with the repercussions of the floods it faced, according to the country's official news agency.

In a statement, the UAE Foreign Ministry announced its "sincere condolences and solidarity with Libya on the victims of floods and storms caused by Hurricane Daniel, which resulted in the death and injury of a number of people, and caused serious damage."
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, also directed to send urgent aid to the areas affected by floods and floods in eastern Libya, and sent a cable of condolences to the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, on the victims of the storm, according to the country's official news agency.
Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Monday sent a cable of condolences to the head of the Libyan Presidential Council for flood victims, according to the country's official news agency.
For its part, the Bahraini Foreign Ministry expressed, in a statement, its sympathy and solidarity with the government and people of Libya for the floods it faced, offering its "condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and the Libyan people."

In a statement, the Omani Foreign Ministry expressed its "sincere condolences and sincere sympathy to the Libyan government and people and to the families of the victims of the floods caused by Storm Daniel, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured."
In a related context, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, in a statement, offered sincere condolences to "the brothers in Libya in the victims of the storm," stressing the solidarity of the Egyptian government and people with them, and wishing that "this crisis passes quickly."
In separate statements, the foreign ministries of Egypt and Jordan also offered their sincere condolences and solidarity with Libya on the victims of the storm.
In a related context, the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, on Monday, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, condoled the victims of the floods, stressing his country's solidarity with Libya, according to the country's official news agency.
In a statement, the Tunisian presidency expressed its "solidarity with the Libyan people following the losses caused by Hurricane Daniel," announcing urgent coordination with the Libyan authorities to provide a helping hand to overcome this ordeal.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry also offered, in a statement, "condolences and sympathy to Libya," stressing "its sympathy and solidarity with it in the face of the effects of this ordeal and its readiness to stand with him."
For his part, the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, called on "the world to rise up in order to relief the besieged and afflicted, in Libya, to provide a helping hand to those affected, and to speed up to save lives," offering condolences to the Libyan people. In a tweet on his account on the "X" platform (formerly Twitter).
On Sunday, the Mediterranean storm "Daniel" swept through several regions in eastern Libya, most notably the cities of Benghazi, Al-Bayda and Al-Marj, in addition to Sousse and Derna, according to the Anadolu correspondent.
Dabaiba also declared all municipalities that were hit by floods and floods in the east of the country "disaster areas", and decided to mourn for 3 days, directing all "officials and ministers without exception to find out the situation, which the eastern region is experiencing," according to what was quoted by the "Our Government" platform (official).
On Saturday, the authorities in eastern Libya declared a maximum state of emergency, which included the suspension of classes in all public and private educational institutions, the closure of shops and a curfew, in order to face any effects of Storm "Daniel".
