U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations: We need to wake the world up to the atrocities unfolding there in Sudan

Sept. 13, 2023 (pen) U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United States cannot fund Sudan's humanitarian response alone. A crisis of this magnitude requires global cooperation.

The ambassador stated that currently the 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan is funded by less than 30 percent. They would continue to call on the international community to intensify its efforts and would continue to call on the international community to do everything in its power to prevent and respond to mass atrocities and to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing atrocities in the Sudan.

This came during a press briefing by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

"Last week, I announced the imposition of U.S. sanctions on Abdurrahim Hamdan Dagalo, a senior RSF commander and brother of RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, in connection with abuses committed by the RSF and associated militias against civilians in Sudan. He also announced US visa restrictions for RSF General and West Darfur Commander Abdirahman Jumaa for his involvement in serious human rights violations. I also note that while in Chad I met with human rights activists and civil society leaders as well as Chadian Transitional President Mahamat Idriss Déby."

The ambassador concluded by saying that they need to wake the world up to the atrocities unfolding there in Sudan.

The conflict in Sudan since April 15 between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has killed more than 5,000 people and displaced millions, according to UN reports.
